ft. OLIVER SOL, Vera Blue, Middle Kids, The Shins, MOSSY

jamesFor this weeks Prime Cuts, we didn’t have to think much about our selections, they were delivered on a plate. OLIVER SOL delivers one of the most intriguing cuts to hit our ears in some time, and with news that Sydney’s Middle Kids, just played live on CONRAN (USA), well things can’t get better for Australian music now.  The Shins are also back with their most personal and stripped back music to date.

oliver-solArtist: Oliver Sol ft. Citizen Kay

Prime Cut: How Did You Know

Cut From: Melbourne, Australia

Flavours Of: Muse, Goldfrapp, Run The Jewel

When you can’t put your finger on the emotion you feel when you first hear a new cut, it often the case that you have stumbled upon something intriguing. Daniel Anthony aka OLIVER SOL bridges the gap between musical boundaries and delivers a perfectly produced cut of strong vocals with an immense sense confidence, helped by some outstanding vocal rap treatment by Citizen Kay. The result is a testament to Anthony’s hugely talented songwriting ability. One to watch in 2017.

vera-blueArtist: Vera Blue

Prime Cut: Private

Cut From: Sydney, Australia

Flavours Of: Emiliana Torrini, BROODS, MS MR

Two gentle piano notes greet the opening moments of Vera Blue’s new Cut ‘Private’ before the delicate and unsettled vocals of Vera’s draw in. Within moments we are taken up a notch with big beats and spiralling samples right back to the vulnerable vocals that we makes Vera Blue one of the most progressive young artist in Australia right now. Engaging, immersive and slightly beautifully neurotic.

middle-kidsArtist: Middle Kids

Prime Cut: Your Love

Cut From: Sydney, Australia

Flavours Of: Methyl Ethel, Big Scary, Sharon Van Etten

Middle Kids quietly achieved a remarkable year in 2016, striking interest in SXSW, supporting Cold War Kids and Ryan Adams, last week they delivered their absolutely outstanding EP debut release. Your Love (delivered a few months back) is the first cut off their self-titled debut, a perfectly crafted song in beat, rhythm and melody, the kind of warmth you get from listening to music of the past. This Sydney three-piece have delivered a timeless debut. ‘Your Love’ is gentle, familiar, emotionally powerful and reassuring. Makes you proud to know we are producing such music in our country.

the-shinsArtist: The Shins

Prime Cut: Mildenhall

Cut From: Albuquerque, New Mexico

Flavours Of: Andrew Bird, Turin Brakes, Wilco

There are not many artists of our time who never fail to surprise and delight with an ability to reinvent. This is probably the most Americana sound we have heard from The Shins or anything Mercer has penned and yet again its nailed. The lyrics draw upon Mercer’s earlier years and when he first discovered music, it’s joyful and beautiful. A band called The Jesus and the Mary Chain/ I started messing with my dad’s guitar/ He taught me some chords just to start me off whittling away. Mercer is one of the best songwriters of our generation, no question.

mossyArtist: MOSSY

Prime Cut: Dumb Terror

Cut From: Sydney, Australia

Flavours Of: MGMT, Miami Horror, The Flaming Lips

When MOSSY was asked about writing his new cut ‘Dumb Terror’, he explained how he recorded the hum of the aeroplane on his laptop on route to America, pitch shifting it to make strange-sounding choral chords. Welcome to MOSSY’s musical world of blended musical genres that collectively deliver his own interpretation of pop music. Here we have a songwriter who has a natural ability to craft songs that are shine and glimmer with sensuality and seduction. Can we say ‘sexy’? Well, we did….
