ft. Sigur Ros, Trentemellor, The Lulu Raes, DJ Shadow, Teenage Fanclub, The Album Leaf

jamesThis week we combine music video and sound clips, offering 6 tracks instead of our usual 5, having learnt that the brilliant Jimmy LaValle, aka The Album Leaf, just delivered his new beautiful new single “Between Waves”.  Sigur Ros deliver more compelling music, and our good friends at Rare Finds, offered us the new cut from Sydney group, The Lulu Raes, who may well have been influenced by long-standing indie pop group Teenage Fan Club.  Crossing electronic borders DJ Shadow continues to break new ground with his sample genius, while Danish multi-instrumentalist and electronic producer Trentemellor delivers the outstanding “River in Me” with guest vocal from the lead singer of Savages.  It’s compelling stuff and deserves your ears.

Prime Cut: Ovedur

Cut From: Reykjavik, Iceland

Flavours Of: Bjork, Thom Yorke, The Knife

Since the release of their outstanding full length album Ageatis Byrjun (A Good Beginning) in 1999, an album drenched in sweeping guitars, Jonsi’s ethereal chant and circling strings, Sigur Ros, have produced some of the finest and considered music of modern time.  Perhaps not to everyone’s taste, the band continue to break new ground, despite recently becoming a 3-piece.  On the eve of another world tour, including an appearance at Splendour In The Grass, this new single has the band focussing on layered samples with Jonsi’s unmistakable vocal sung in his native tongue.  Haunting, touching and always slightly uncomfortable. The video depicts  a young, possibly homeless woman gets sloshed on a bottle of vodka, directed by acclaimed Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund.

Prime Cut: River In Me

Cut From: Copenhagen, Denmark

Flavours Of: New Order, Death In Vegas, The Chemical Brothers

If there is one producer/artist who has the ability to re-invent and refuse to be pigeon-holed, the accolade goes to Trentemellor.  From the very beginning of River in Me, the beat takes hold while guest vocals by Savages Jehnny Beth complete this epic short-lived track.   Having spent the last few years touring his third album, Los, “River In Me” is the first cut to be delivered from his much-anticipated album Fixion, due out imminently.

Prime Cut: Never Leave

Cut From: Sydney, Australia

Flavours Of: SOAK, Foster The People, Phoenix

Too often TWL is first to judge Australian bands for not throwing their “all” into their music, standing by it proudly and unapologetically. The Lulu Raes continue to deliver classic and timeless pop- music.  The Sydney four piece, have a knack for writing honest pop music with vibrancy and charm.  “Never Leave” has the band affirming such songwriting ability with catchy licks, shuffling drums and the whimsical boyish tones of lead singers Eddie Bomber Burton.  There is just enough Australiana here to make us bloody proud.

Artist: DJ Shadowdj shadow

Prime Cut: Bergschrund

Cut From: San Jose, California

Flavours Of: Caribou, Amon Tobin, Kid Koala

In 1996, DJ Shadow delivered an album that changed the way many musical producers would make music thereafter.  The album made the “Guinness Book of Records” as being the first album to be completely made from sampled.  Many of us however lost contact with DJ Shadow soon after, so it was with much excitement and curiosity to learn of the delivery of “The Mountain Will Fall”. Second single to be lifted from the album provides a swirl of samples and generous beats that is best heard on headphones to appreciate production at its best.

Prime Cut: I’m In Love

Cut From: Belshill, United Kingdom

Flavours Of: Yo La Tengo, Deep Sea Arcade, Kurt Vile

On quick calculation, it’s overwhelming to think that TFC released Bandwagonesque was released over 25 years ago.  Come September they will release their 10th studio album and with age and sensibility on their side, not much has changed, just the perfectly written pop songs that the band have mastered and we have come to expect.  TFC have their formula down-packed and if you write songs like this, why change.  A welcome return from the much-loved Scottish foursome.

Artist: The Album Leafalbum-leaf_1

Prime Cut: Between Waves

Cut From: San Diego, California

Flavours Of: Balmorhea, The American Dollar

The Album Leaf is solo musical project of Jimmy LaValle, a multi-instrumentalist, producer and collaborator who continues to fly under the radar, his slight success is baffling, but equally a wonderfully kept secret.  LaValle has the ability to create albums that play out like a soundtrack/film score to our lives, the perfect accompaniment to a long endless drive, cliche perhaps, we encourage the experience.  “Between Waves” continues this wonderful journey with only a subtle shift in direction, a more layered and rounded sound with a stronger emphasis on his gentle vocal tone.
