Welcome to the 20th Weaning Lambs post. Before we deliver to you our 7 picks of this fortnight’s best undiscovered bands/artists , we would like to thank every single artist/band who send us their music. It pains us that we cannot support every track that we receive as we know just how much heart and soul goes into their making. We honestly get inundated with music so if we do deliver your track, we whole-heartily congratulate you as you managed to seduce our musical ears. This week we travel the world again and deliver music Belfast and Cleveland, right back to our home town Melbourne. From lo-fi pop to electro-pop, from indie-rock to indie-pop, we have a gut feeling that there is something here for everyone. Support new music and make this lot “upcoming” artists.
Track Our Place
Kind Of Reminds Us Of Courtney Barnett, Real Estate, Paul Kelly
Based In Perth, Australia
Courtney Barnett may have just convinced the world that our challenged accent was something that fellow Australian artists should finally sing proud. Introducing, Verge Collection a band from Perth who balance classic pop sensibilities and working class poetry to channel the collective conscious of suburban Australian millennials. Our Place is a charming, witty and effortlessly catchy tune and we look forward to seeing these chaps on their upcoming Australian tour.
P.S. We had to show you the video, it’s great.
Kind Of Reminds Us Of The Vaccines, The Wannadies, The Cribs
Based In Stockholm, Sweden
Chirping have already had the praise from our beloved BBC Radio 6 and Indie Shuffle so we should be offering this slot of Weaning Lambs to less known artists BUT, we simply couldn’t leave this track in our inbox. This song and the band, for that matter have all the makings of success, we just need you, the punter to believe us.
Track The Dark
Kind Of Reminds Us Of M83, Washed Out, Wild Nothing
Based In Belfast, Ireland
From the moment The Dark hits first note, you instantly get the idea of what you are in for and if you don’t, let us spell out. Blissed-out, laid-back electro-pop that is so dreamy, well, it’s just so dreamy. Gentle vocals laid against a nicely produced track that mixes jangly reverb guitars, gliding synths and a simple beat. Born at a local house party, the three musicians bonded over spelling naughty words on a fridge magnet crossword.
Track Floor Light Flickers
Kind Of Reminds Us Of The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys
Based In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, United Kingdom
We have a sweeter spot for bands/artists that contact us direct to share their music, makes it feel more like a Weaning Lamb track. Heist, a 4 piece indie rock band, like most bands we feature here, are young, too bloody young (21 we think) but let age be no judgement, Floor Light Flickers, is a clever and classic sounding indie rock dance floor filler, so an appropriately named track.
Track The Dogs
Kind Of Reminds Us Of Roisin Murphy, Frou Frou
Based In Melbourne, Australia
Another fine track from an upcoming Melbourne artist, Eilish Gilligan delivered this beautiful song, her first solo single and we are glad we were the ones to support. Elegantly produced with Gilligan’s gentle lyrics set against sweeping synths, delicate keys and a soothing rhythm, our only problem was it only went for 2 minutes 45 seconds, cheeky having us yearning for me. A beautiful debut.
Weaning Lamb The Fours
Kind Of Reminds Us Of Yo La Tengo, Galaxie 500
Based In Cleveland, Ohio
There is little we know about The Fours, we do know that they are signed by a great little label called World of Birds that has some very cool branding and a great website. What we can tell you is The Fours make lo-fi, power pop music that is so stripped back in production it should only be allowed to be played on 8-track or 45 S. With this feature on this Weaning Lambs we hope that the label and the band keep us posted on more great music like this.
Kind Of Reminds Us Of TV On The Radio, The Decemberists
Based In Melbourne, Australia
Halcyon Drive don’t need introduction it seems, following some outstanding reviews from recent support slots, maybe we have jumped a bandwagon. Either way, Halcyon Drive know the formula to success and writing accessible but unique pop tunes. With upcoming headline shows, around Australia, this is another great Melbourne band with a polished sound, Untethered is perfectly laced with infectious hooks.
