Dear followers of TWL, we apologise that we have not been weaning the last few weeks. We endeavour to be consistent in our various posts and realise the bated breath that is gasping for air amongst our readers with an urge to be breathed new life of VERY independant music. We are a non-profit blog held together amongst mere mortal musical lovers of different shapes, sizes and ages and TWL is purely an escapism for us. We do not pretend to be musical journalists, nor are we claiming to be completely knowledgeable of the music industry, BUT one thing we do know is that we simply love music and love Weaning Lambs. It reminds us that there is so much beautiful and amazing music out there, so much in fact, that the world cannot spin on it’s axis quick enough. We just hope, really hope, that our modest blog and this post does its bit to support bands around the world who need a platform to be heard upon.
Weaning Lamb Banoffee
Track With Her
File Next To Moloko
Based In Melbourne, Australia
You may well have heard of Banoffee, aka Martha Brown, following rave reviews at this year’s Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay so not much needing the support of this supportive post. However, it is a good excuse to showcase some brilliant talent with this blissful track of gliding synths, syncopated beats and textured vocals.
Track Dance With You
File Next To Bright Eyes
Based In Union, United States
Instantly catchy and memorable, Charlie Sztyk writes effortless indie, folk, pop that will certainly continue to grow as an artist and win over soon to come admiring fans. A voice that is pitch perfect, the music is polished and I hope we hear more of Sztyk over the coming year.
Track CA Kid
File Next To Mercury Rev, MGMT
Based In Los Angeles, USA
CA Kid is taken from the recent EP release from this LA based band. They have been around since 2010 and gained steady momentum but with the release of Paradise EP we hope that this sun soaked quirky rock release will get them on a tour plane/bus near us in the future.
Track Til Night Meets The Sun
File Next To First Aid Kit
Based In Adelaide, Australia
Loren Kate is another artist that doesn’t need the support of Weaning Lambs but we want to be certain she gets heard. Winner of last years Telstra Road to Discovery, Loren writes utterly beautiful stories set against gentle acoustic plucked strings, beautiful harmonies and shuffling snares with a result that is simply beautiful.
Track Under The Lilacs
File Next To The Strokes
Based In St. Paul, Minnesota
The email sent through to us, introducing The Persian Leaps, said that the EP of which this track is lifted, is “celestial jangly pop”, that pretty much sums it. On first listen, it may sound quite satisfying, but listen deeper and you can hear a wonderful mash of catchy pop grooves. It is a track that is worth a few listens and then, wham!, it all starts to make sense.
Track Fatal Shore
File Next To Joy Division, Television
Based In Sydney
With a pulsating, driving rhythm, angular guitar and baritone vocals, this powerful, six minute track is a soundtrack for a new age, harking back to the golden age of post punk. If it wasn’t coming out of sunny Sydney, you might well believe these guys are making music in the dank warehouses of 80’s Manchester. A massive, reverb-y vibe on this one, make sure to play it LOUD.
File Next To The Drones, Smashing Pumpkins
Based In Melbourne
With a healthy serve of guitar fuzz, escalating to a powerful piece of 90’s inspired grunge-rock, Recompense is a massive track that features on the bands upcoming EP Play Things, due out in October. The video features the band and their mates having a night on the town in downtown Collingwood, looking like a hell of a good time.
File Next To Vivian Girls, The Courtneys
Based In Brisbane
Clocking in under 2 minutes, Studville is a sunny slice of garage pop with easy-breezy vocals from vocalist/guitarist Alice Rezende. Gaining momentum by having featured on the lineup for Big Sound and support slots for bands like The Drums and Tomorrows Tulips, make sure to keep an ear out for these guys and gal. Don’t forget to grab your hammock!
Track Buddy Boy
File Next To M83, MGMT
Based In Brooklyn, NYC
Buddy Boy is an atmospheric piece of indie pop, with smooth vocals, trippy synth lines and a huge drum sound. It’s taken from their latest EP New Hobbies on Oh La La Records. Coming into warmer weather here in the southern hemisphere, this is a perfect track for this year’s summer playlist.
